How to submit articles

Model Shipwright, the quarterly journal that preceded the Shipwright annual, ran for more than 140 issues. Such longevity relied on a devoted readership, many of whom were reliable, trusted and regular contributors. The new format's success will similarly be reliant on the quality of the contributions, and the editorial team are keen to both maintain existing relationships and foster new and exciting relationships, in order to bring new types of articles to the fore. As such, Shipwright always welcomes submissions of articles to be included in the Annual.

The recently expanded editorial remit of Shipwright has meant that submissions can now be considered on a far greater range of subjects than would have previously been possible; these of course include step-by-step builds of ship models (in all scales and utilising various scratch-building methods, and including both waterline and full-hull builds), but we also welcome articles dealing with most aspects of ships and shipbuilding. These may include, for example, marine art, naval architecture, commercial or naval maritime history and research, ship restoration or reconstruction, marine archaeology, or historical aspects of dockyard tools, techniques, industry and shipbuilding.

Articles should be emailed as an attachment or supplied as double spaced typescript on single sides of paper, accompanied by an electronic version on disk, in text only format. Feature articles will normally be between 4000 and 8000 words long. Note that material which is not suitable for publication as an article may still be suitable for use elsewhere in the Annual. Submissions should be accompanied by illustrations, either as photocopies of drawings and photographs to accompany the text or on disk (CD or DVD) - please do not send the originals until the article has been accepted for publication. Bear in mind that in the case of ship-model photography, clarity of detail is essential. To assist contributors who wish to supply images electronically, either scans or from a digital camera, then what is required is as follows:

  1. Pictures should be either at 300 dpi resolution, to give a width of approximately 16cm, or if at 72dpi resolution, then the width will have to be approximately 60cm in order to allow for a four times reduction to obtain an acceptable image for reproduction. Smaller sizes will result in images that can only be used across one column, as opposed to full page width
  2. Images should be saved either as EPS, TIFF, or JPEG format
  3. In addition, we would prefer hard copies of the images to be included, to give a fall-back option should the digital images not prove adequate

Questions relating to any aspect of submissions should be addressed to the Editor, care of Conway:
